There was no indication that the debate did anything to change the course of a campaign that appeared to be moving in Mr. Obama’s direction.
Mr. McCain chose not to use the evening — the second of three scheduled debates — to attack Mr. Obama’s background or character. But in a moment that caught the attention of people in both parties, he appeared agitated in criticizing Mr. Obama for a Senate vote he cast, referring to his opponent only as «that one.»

A oportunidade era perfeita e o formato do debate era o ideal para o grande retorno de John McCain; estava em vantagem por ser o especialista deste tipo de debate, formato townhall. As sondagens obrigavam-no a ter que recuperar terreno em relação a Obama. Mas tal não aconteceu e o segundo debate televisivo acabou por não ser o momento de John Mccain. A sua tarefa de conquistar a Casa Branca começa a ficar cada vez mais complicada.

O townhall acabou por funcionar melhor a favor de Barack Obama; por uma questão de imagem de percepção. Obama mostrou-se sempre mais dinâmico e confiante. E Obama, que sempre foi elogiado pelos seus dotes oratórios, não chegou a ser brilhante mas foi de facto melhor do que McCain em termos de clareza na exposição das suas posições. E John McCain que baseou muito da sua campanha em ataques pessoais a Obama, auxiliado pela «incomparável» Sarah Palin, além disso também terá sempre o factor George W. Bush contra ele:

He spoke of the need for individual energy conservation; called for expansion of service programs, including the Peace Corps; and described the hunger among young people to serve their country. McCain sounded like a legislator, Obama like a president.
A few days ago, McCain, pressing his effort to paint Obama as a strange and mysterious figure, asked: «Who is the real Barack Obama?»
Last night’s debate raised a different question: Who is the real John McCain? Is he the man who used to tout himself as a problem-solver, or is he the desperate candidate who lurches from attack to attack?
